Memories can offer rebirth of many emotions. They can trigger the senses to bring familiar sensations back to life. Their power allows a person to relive the glory and enchantment of their youth and reflect on their previous character. Unwanted memories haunt the viewer while desired memories beautify the soul. Staying in happy memories – and even depressing ones – for a short time is healthy, because memories are ongoing reminders of personality. However, if a person is determined to stay in the past forever, he becomes dissatisfied with the present. Slowly, the memories tear apart their minds, devouring their confidence and self-esteem until the individual reaches their ultimate demise. Therefore, dwelling in the past hinders contentment, because it is impossible to recreate the euphoria of the past. Little did Gatsby know this was true, as he desperately tried to reconnect with Daisy, wanting to continue their young love story where it left off. Although after almost five years Daisy left her position, Gatsby persisted by looking at the green light at the end of his platform, wearing his pink suit – immature – and associating himself with the clock in the center of the Nick's fireplace. No impetuous attempt by Gatsby succeeded in recreating the past, and as a result, he suffered not only a mental, but also a physical downfall. The green light enables Gatsby's lonely desire to recreate the past. Because the light represents Daisy, every night Gatsby is plagued by a bright, continuous glow that reminds him of an almost forgotten love that has since left him with an empty soul. Not once has he felt truly happy without Daisy, so he clings to the green light that represents her and, therefore, the past. ...... middle of paper ......ite this, he is still trying to control and restore it. The awkward moment that follows states, "I think we all thought for a moment that she had broken into pieces on the floor" (Fitzgerald 92), which also represents the fact that the past cannot be reconstructed because , even though the clock didn't break, the atmosphere suggested that it did. As the characters are surrounded by an ambiance of broken time, it is evident that the past cannot be restored once broken, making everyone extremely uncomfortable. Gatsby's memories led him to death, because he did not understand the importance of releasing and respecting history for what it is. Instead, he clung to the past thanks to the green light, the pink suit and the simple clock.
