Essay / Changes in Hollywood Films in the Early 1930s
From 1930 to 1935, Hollywood films expanded and changed quite drastically, especially musicals. In 1934, Hollywood's chief censor, Will Hays, adopted a code and began enforcing it in 1934. The code was called the Hays Code and controlled the content of films that were or were not allowed to be released to the public . Before then, there was a large gray area about what was published. 1933's Gold Diggers was one such film; compared to 1935's Top Hat, the censorship and differences are quite clear. When we look at Gold Diggers from 1933, we have our dual structure format with the characters being a group of showgirls facing unemployment and the difficulties of depression, and there the director is trying to keep the show going but a lack of funding l 'stop. A group of upper-class men trying to stop one of their brothers from marrying one of the showgirls are thrown into the mix, but accidentally fall in love with the showgirls themselves. So essentially there is a battle between perfect love and the barriers between arists....
