  • Essay / The Effects of Clustering on Memory - 2253

As the world spins and time passes, we learn many new things every day. Some can be remembered immediately, but some are impossible to achieve. So, as humans, we try many ways to make daily life easier. Word grouping is one of them. Grouping means “similar” or “identical.” The way we use it is when we have a thing to do, we will categorize the same thing that has a similar or the same pattern or any common pattern. This word grouping seems to have a different impact on each people. We have two types of memory, long-term memory and short-term memory. Long-term memory is something we can remember through our children's experience. Meanwhile, short-term memory may be something we see a few minutes or days ago, but after a few years we can no longer remember all the details of the incident. So the main aim of this research is to find out whether word grouping will impact our memory or not and how time will have a huge impact on memory to remember any information. According to Cohen (1963), there are two types of categorized words, exhaustive (E) and non-exhaustive (NE). It's the same with grouped and ungrouped words. When three or four words represent all or almost all of the words in the category, it is therefore exhaustive (Cohen, 1963). Non-exhaustive is a word selected from a large number of words nominally belonging to the category. As part of Cohen's research, Cohen conducted two experiments. Experiment I, Cohen divided nine groups to try another small group. All three groups were given a list of 10, 15, or 20 unrelated words, 10, 15, or 20 categories of NE words, or 10, 15, or 20 categories of E words. Constant time was given to study the entire list. Meanwhile, in Experiment II, the total presentation was varied...in the middle of the sheet......words in the lists, so that participants could remember all the words, which also contributed to the weaknesses of this study. Another few weaknesses of this research also contributed to the results. First of all, it is in the room where the experiment was carried out. The most important element of every experience is the comfort of each participant. During my experiment, the experiment was carried out in a hot room although there is air conditioning inside the room but it is not enough to cool the room. This can affect the mood of the participants and they only think about finishing the experiment as soon as they can and return to it. A second weakness concerns the participants. They know they won't get anything because they are helping for free. It is very likely that they did not do their best and complete the tasks assigned to them simply because they respected us..
