This disease was once rare because it was unusual to accumulate enough fat to damage the liver. However, many people in the United States now suffer from NAFLD and NASH. Before 1998, no cases of NASH had been heard of. In contrast, statistics from a website called “Partners In Liver Wellness” provide alarming information. The site states: "Due to the ongoing obesity epidemic in the United States, fatty liver disease is a very common disorder: an estimated two-thirds of obese adults and half of obese children have fat accumulation in their the liver »8. He also mentions that up to 20% of obese people may suffer from NASH. That's a scary number if this happens at, say, West Anchorage High School. In high schools in the United States, about 20 percent of students are obese. If half of these students have NAFLD, one in ten students will have it. If you're in a class of fifty students, one of them is going to die from NASH. Schoolwide at West High, approximately 40 students will be affected by this illness. The text then talks specifically about the type of food we should eat in order to prevent this disease. He says: “[Omega-6] promotes skin health, lowers cholesterol and helps make our blood “sticky””8. Omega-6 fatty acid is found in poultry, eggs, avocado, hemp oil, soybean oil and cottonseed oil. Omega-3 is another good fat for humans. According to the text, it reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke while helping to reduce the symptoms of hypertension. Many types of fish contain omega-3 fatty acids. Scientific research indicates that humans should take omega-3 and omega-6 in a ratio of 1:1 to 1:4.
