  • Essay / Analysis of the poem "A Drop of Rain Falling" - 1101

A Drop of Rain FallingTears welled up in Lela's eyes as she turned her back on her husband as they lay in bed. She could barely breathe. She fought hard not to cry. His heart felt so heavy, as if it would burst at any moment. It wasn't just the words Ravi used, but also the way he spoke to her; and the tone he used. She lied, motionless, trying to scan her thoughts for a time when Ravi might have spoken to her with such behavior. No, not really. He had been acting uncharacteristically lately. Lately he seemed angry and even arrogant at times. Like the last time she asked him, he wanted to have a cup of tea. It was customary that whenever one made a preferential choice of drink, the other would naturally offer the same thing. “I’m making some tea, would you like a cup?” She remembers how he attacked her. “No, did I ask for a bloody cup of tea?” Ever since Vishal's arrival was talked about, Ravi's behavior has been completely different. Lela thought she could really trace this story back to around the first time Vishal's father, Lito Khair, came from Bangladesh to visit them. Lito Khair was a successful and powerful businessman in his country. It was about a month ago. Since then, Ravi started acting out of the ordinary. What's ordinary anyway, Lela wondered? Lito had traveled to New Jersey with his youngest son to visit him...and ask the boy's Ravi Bhai (a formal, respectful Bengali meaning for uncle) a family request. He came to grant guardianship of the recently 16-year-old Vishal to his Ravi Bhai, as if granting him an honor. Wasn't that more of an imposition than an honor, Lela thought? Lela and Ravi had only been married for three years. They were still in the first... middle of paper ......r when Lela was at work. Ravi quickly replied, "That seems like rubbish to me. I really don't care." He is my uncle's son. I've already told Lito that we will accept Vishal's guardianship whether you agree or not, and whether you like it or not! » What caught Lela off guard was the surprising response that was so unlike Ravi. Over the past four years they have been together, Ravi has always been respectful and thoughtful in her contributions. Lela felt like she had just been punched. It was the cold contempt and lack of respect that was hurtful. His words were sharp. “Goodnight, Ravi,” she said softly as she positioned herself to sleep. Crying softly, Lela closed her eyes and reflected on a quote from the Maharish Mahesh Yogi: “Just think of any negativity that falls on you like a drop of rain falling into the ocean of your happiness.."
