Essay / Speech For Whom the Bell Tolls - 764
Hello/Hello ladies and gentlemen. Today I'm going to talk about a classic novel by Ernest Hemmingway called For Whom the Bell Tolls, written in 1940. The story is about a young American called Robert Jordan, who is part of the anti-fascist guerrilla team during the Spanish Civil War. Robert's particular skill involves the use of explosives, and in the book his mission is to destroy a bridge so others can attack a town called Segovia. A classic novel and genre can relate to modern life, as soon as it does so. does not relate to it, it generally ceases to be a classic. However, for a book to remain a classic, the writer must be a good, successful writer and people must enjoy his books, what he writes about and why. For Whom the Bell Tolls is partly based on Hemmingway's own experiences, and after the publication of For Whom the Bell Tolls, Hemmingway became one of America's greatest writers. I think For Whom the Bell Tolls is a classic because it's a story from Spanish history. Civil war, and basically war in general. People can always relate to it as long as there is a war, so right now, given the war in Iraq, people can relate to the book. One of the reasons the book became so popular so quickly is that World War II occurred shortly after the book was published. The style in which Ernest Hemmingway writes is different from that of some other writers of his time. Hemmingway doesn't drone on and on, instead there's always something happening, some action happening, or some action being planned. One of the main differences with Hemmingway's style is that in For Whom the Bell Tolls, the story constantly shifts from one character to another. By doing it this way, the reader sees more aspects of what is happening and knows what each character is doing in more detail. The type of language Hemmingway uses is simple; however, the characters in the book sometimes speak different languages. However, in some parts of the book the language seems extremely old-fashioned and some characters use words like "thou" and mostly old English words. Aside from that, Hemmingway's sentence structures are simple to understand. People can relate to the book because they can imagine what the characters look like and they have an idea of the setting..
