Essay / Mobbing and groupthink in the film Malena - 1871
The film is sequenced by comparing the five stages of mobbing: critical incident, psychological aggression, group unity, marking and expulsion (Elliot, 2009). Mobbing (2011) was originally used to describe animal behavior, but now the term is used to describe human behavior and the definition is: ...emotional aggression. It begins when an individual becomes the target of disrespectful and harmful behavior. Through innuendo, rumors, and public discredit, a hostile environment is created in which an individual brings others together to willingly or unwittingly participate in ongoing malicious actions aimed at forcing a person from the workplace. This definition refers to a workplace and even though she does not have a job, she is subject to the same behavior. The first stage (critical incident) is where Malena is the most beautiful woman in town and the women become jealous because the men cannot hide their attraction to her. The second stage (psychological aggression) begins when no one wants anything to do with her and false accusations are made against her. The third stage (group unity) is where wars start and the city "accepts" that it should be helped anyway. The fourth stage (branding) is where she realizes that no one will help her and that there is a war going on in Italy and she is prostituting herself to survive and is basically adopting their perception of her. The final stage (expulsion) is where the women of the town beat her. Giuseppe Tornatore shows in his film Maléna how communication is not only verbal but non-verbal and how cruel it can be when groupthink targets a victim: the city against Maléna.First stageThe first stage begins to unfold from the very beginning of the film. The critical incident is that Malena is superior in everything she does. Not only is she naturally beautiful in face and form, but she is a talented seamstress and she makes and wears the most beautiful clothes in town. Her long, thick hair contrasts with the short hair styles most women wear and most women wear dark, dark clothing that is virtually shapeless. She is polite and respectful and keeps to herself when she enters the city not only to take care of her father who lives alone, but also to look for a job. As she leaves the employment office, the townspeople know that no one will hire her. Because of malicious gossip, the townspeople become suspicious of her as she remains silent..
