Essay / Dadaism in the History of the Dada Movement - 807
This piece consisted of a simple urinal turned upside down and signed "R. MUTT 1917" on the left side of the base. Dadaism succeeded by reducing the meaning of art to a simple act of placing a distasteful object in an art gallery and deeming it worthy of being called a work of art. This would also grant it the same appreciation that a timeless masterpiece would receive. The minimum amount of work was given value equal to that of a significant work of art. This changed a lot of things in the art world because Dadaism was a statement that reflected the public's emotions about war. The Dadaists believed that nationalism was responsible for the First World War. The urinal was a statement ridiculing the Renaissance and nationalism. The artists wanted to express their idea of the end of the war and their opposition to the leadership of the country. Before this art movement, the meaning of art was pleasing to the eye because it consisted of accurate depictions of objects. This fountain symbolized a new beginning for unconventional art and conformity in art.
