Essay / The Characters of I Am Not Afraid - 1426
Michele AmitranoMichele's compassion is his most prominent characteristic which makes him attractive to the reader. Throughout the novel, he displays empathy far beyond his years, often making readers forget that he is only nine years old. This is clearly seen in three main cases. First, when he attacks his sister when she has fallen (p. 4) despite his own fears. Second, offering to complete the package in Barbra's place when Skull forces her to complete an embarrassing package. Finally, and above all, when he takes care of Filippo. This creates a positive contrast to the rest of Acqua Traverse which seems to lack compassion. By describing places and people, he reveals his unique way of seeing things which demonstrates his childish imagination and innocence. He often combines reality and fantasy, as when he describes the “wicked witch” (p. 89) to Maria. Michele is a hero in many ways. He exhibits all the characteristics and actions of someone who would definitely be considered a hero. He shows compassion to those who are weaker and more vulnerable and helps them despite his fears for his own safety. His actions in Filippo's case set him apart from others, as a hero. Michele defies his parents' wishes and, knowing he would get into trouble, returns to Filippo to honor his promise. However, it is his actions at the end of the text that define him as a hero. By saving Filippo from the hole and taking his place, he risks his life and is a hero to Maria, whom he protects from all the problems and conflicts of the Amitrano family. Towards the end of the text, Michele's happiness is evident. . When he finds Filippo alive, he is upset and bursts into tears (p. 208). He seems to have achieved what he wanted all along, to free Filippo. By the end of the novel, Michele has matured. At first, when he meets Filippo, he is loath to touch him, but at the end of the text, Michele kisses Filippo as they "shiver with the cold" (p. 211). Pino Amitrano It is clear that Pino is bored with his family life in Acqua Traverse. It becomes apparent that he justifies his actions by making himself believe they are necessary to improve their lives..
