Essay / Gregor's Altruism in Metamorphosis By Franz Kafka
Kafka's relationship with his father in the real world parallels Gregor's in the story, yet Gregor's desire to maintain peace with his father does not appear in Kafka's. In a letter Kafka wrote to his father, often titled "Letter to His Father", Kafka had choice words for his father, calling him "...vermin..." who "...also sucks blood to survive . .” and “You are not fit for life…” (I couldn’t even imagine one of my future children saying this to me, it is for me the result of real hatred). Kafka and Samsa's relationships with their fathers are real human problems, something that a real person and a fictional character can share. Gregor simply handled the situation in a less confrontational manner, leading to a peaceful resolution in which Gregor allowed himself to die so he wouldn't cause any more trouble for his family.
