    William Guo Class 803How was the theme of "self-reliance" or "loss of innocence" developed in the novel? The theme of "self-reliance" was developed in the novel Warriors Don't Cry. Melba was an African-American girl who was part of the Little Rock Nine. She joined Central High School for better opportunities. However, she was mistreated and somewhat bullied at school because of her race. It had to rely on a military division called the 101st. Mostly; she relied on a soldier named Danny from the division. Danny followed her everywhere to protect her from physical violence. After a while, Melba became very dependent on Danny. This is shown when she writes "Thanks Danny" after each school day Danny was there. She was counting on Danny to save her eyes when another student sprayed her with a stinging substance. After a while, Danny left school and Melba had to rely on herself for protection. She uses the trick her grandmother taught her to confuse the bully.
