Nov. 21, 2013.The German Requiem, composed of seven movements, is a masterpiece by Johannes Brahms around 1868. Unlike the Latin Requiem, “a religious service for the dead” [1] which had lasted for hundreds years since the Middle Ages, the German Requiem, instead of asking God to be merciful to the dead, focuses on bringing "comfort, hope and pieces"[1] to human lives. Spending eleven years completing the requiem, Brahms modified his piece in memory of his deceased mother and Schumann, people who meant a lot in his life. During the public rehearsal, the first, second, fifth and sixth movements were performed. The orchestra played with woodwinds, piccolo, flutes, strings and harp, tuba and violins (etc.); the choir notably sang in German in order to give an original meaning to the piece. The first movement began with “granting blessings to the mourners.” [1] By eliminating the violins in this movement, Brahms aimed to produce a mournful atmosphere. The chorus begins with the words “Blessed are those who mourn”, the deep and loud sound of the orchestra indeed created a feeling of sorrow and bitterness. In the second movement, "one of the most desperate",[1] the violins joined the orchestra and produced a ringing sound using mutes, "small pieces of rubber which dampen the vibration of the string".[ 1] The growing sound creates a feeling. of spectral and prepares the singing of the choir for the blossoming of the flowers and the disappearance of the herbs. Repetitive lyrics ... middle of paper ... create such a beautiful piece with a smooth transformation between highs and lows. Personally, I really respect Brahms' work and really enjoyed the open rehearsal. Beyond the fact that Brahms is an excellent composer and pianist, his concern impresses me a lot. His accomplishments inspire me that being a useful person, whether a musician or not, must apply his knowledge and efforts to contribute and care for others. Additionally, powerful music always seems amazing to me, and even though I don't completely understand the piece, I have gained cultural experience and interest in further exploration of Brahms and the world of music.
