Essay / The CN Tower: a feat like no other - 1082
It could be argued that the greatest architectural structure ever created by Canadians is the CN Tower. Construction of the CN Tower began on February 6, 1973 and was completed on June 26, 1976. The CN Tower was considered a major breakthrough when it was created, as it broke a previously set record. Once the CN Tower was completed, it earned the title of "tallest free-standing structure in the world", measuring 1,815.4 feet. The creation of the CN Tower was a defining moment for Canada and still impacts Canadians today. One of the reasons the CN Tower was a defining moment is that it solved a communications problem that the city of Toronto was experiencing at the time. Another reason why the CN Tower is important is that it contributes to our economy by attracting many tourists each year. The most important reason why the CN Tower was a defining moment is that it gives Canadians a sense of inspiration and national pride. During the 1960s, Toronto was in the midst of a building boom as many buildings went up, transforming the Toronto city skyline from one that was formed of small buildings to one filled with large skyscraper. This presented a challenge for the transmission towers that existed at that time, as they "simply weren't tall enough to broadcast above the new buildings" (CN Tower). Due to the creation of the new buildings, signals from the transmission towers bounced off the buildings and as a result, people living in the area received insufficient television and radio quality. Thus, it was proposed to create a new telecommunications tower that would have signal receivers at extremely high observation points at the top of the antenna at 1815.4 feet and at 1109...... middle of paper ...... greatly contributed to the CN Tower on the social, economic, technological and political levels. Canadians should never forget the contributions made by the CN Tower and that is why people believe that the CN Tower is certainly one of the greatest engineering feats accomplished by Canadians.
