Essay / Commodification and Exploitation of Surrogacy - 1635
A discussion of surrogacy could give rise to many different arguments, but one of the most important would be one that addresses the ethical and moral relevance of surrogacy in relation to both the surrogate mother and the contracting parents. In terms of ethical and moral relevance, we might ask whether the parties involved are being denied negative rights and, furthermore, how this might produce an undesirable outcome, for example commodification or exploitation. In what follows, I will argue that full gestational surrogacy commodifies and exploits women and children; however, I question the negative connotation of the word "exploit" when the surrogate is fully informed of the process. Although surrogacy should be legally permitted, I argue that adoption should be the primary means of “having” a child. even more broadly, it takes humans and treats them as things rather than as thinking and reasoning beings (p. 174). Radin identifies non-fungible objects as alienable or essential to the person's identity, but fungible objects are those that can be replaced by money (p. 176). I take advantage of the above argument to show that whether or not surrogate parents or contract parents view this exchange as commodification, it undoubtedly transforms both the surrogate mother and the unborn child into a merchandise. Thinking of women and children/fetuses in terms of market rhetoric seems inherently wrong and results in a devaluation of life and morality. For example, prostitution commodifies women and even children by selling their bodies, which is extremely personal to them. If we accept ...... middle of paper ...... a service that is deserved, this allows many families, especially those abroad, to have the means to purchase resources vital and contract parents to have a genetically related child for them. It therefore follows that non-commodified surrogacy or adoption is preferable, but in light of current practices, almost impossible to fully implement; However, I would like to encourage those considering adoption or surrogacy to fully educate themselves about the process and ensure that they are not violating the morals of themselves and others.
