  • Essay / Gender Discrimination in Sports Media - 1867

Most people watch some form of sport, whether it's the Olympics or highlights on ESPN. The NBA and NHL playoffs are underway and they seem to be the only news on ESPN. There is almost no coverage of the WNBA playoffs or women's athletics. Tennis is one of the only major sports on ESPN reserved for women. Whereas during the Olympics, media coverage seems to be continuous and almost equal. Women's participation in sport is at an all-time high and has almost become equal to that of men. The sports media do not fail to show this equality and distort the way we see these athletes. Across the disciplines of sociology and gender studies, we can see that despite the many advances made by women in sports since the enactment of Title IX, “traditional” notions of masculinity and femininity still dominate media coverage of men. and women in sport, which is observed in Olympic programs and sports news broadcasts. Sociology is a growing discipline and is an important factor in understanding different parts of society. Sociology is “a social science which studies human societies, their interactions and the processes which preserve and modify them” (Faris and Form P1). Basically, sociology is the study of different groups and their human interactions in relation to society as a whole. One aspect of society that sociologists have studied is media coverage of sports. These sociologists have studied how race, gender, gender identity, and stereotypes affect what and how sports are covered in the media. Overall, sociologists critically examine parts of society and draw conclusions about the parts of society they have studied. Sociologists have done numerous studies on how the media covers gender identity in sports.G...... middle of article ......d Nicole Willms. “This revolution is not televised.” Offside: Critical Essays on Gender and Sport.
