  • Essay / The Clear Light of Day by Anita Desai Analysis

Anita Desai (1937) is a modern Indian-English writer, she is famous for her fiction writings, not only in India but also all over the world. She emerged on the literary horizon after Indian independence and her main focus is her writings on “contemporary issues” (Batts, 2011, p. 3). Desai mainly writes about the miserable plight of women who suffer under the leadership of their insensitive and inconsiderate husbands, fathers and brothers. All of this leads to a male-female relationship that brings the characters into alienation, withdrawal, loneliness, isolation and lack of communication. Most of the protagonists in his novel are alienated from the world, from society, from their families and even from themselves because they are not ordinary people but individuals. The similar situation also applies in “The Clear Light of Day” published in 1980. Like most of its protagonist, Bimla is alienated and faces the fierce onslaught of existence alone but ultimately finds her freedom in the end. Thus, this article will describe the unique character of Bimla which will elucidate Bimla's entrapment of his own creation and gaining freedom in the end. The characters in Desai's novels are generally "neurotic, highly sensitive women, engaged in dreams and imagination and removed from their surroundings." (Batts, 2011, p. 5). The protagonist often has different opinions from others and embarks on a long journey of contemplation in order to find the meaning of existence. The protagonist usually suffers more from his relationship than the other characters. Its protagonists, as Garbree (2009, p. 1) points out, are not static characters; they attempt to know themselves and, in doing so, “undergo a transformation leading to self-enlightenment.” Bimla in Clear Light of ...... middle of paper ...... as precious to her. It took away her relationship with Raja, her aspirations, and she clings to the bitterness that remains. However, she fails to recognize “time as conservative” because she lives in anguish thinking that she has lost everything. She only complains about being left alone but does not accept the changes that occur over time. She is not able to move forward with time, she lived thinking that the relationship between them would forever remain like that of childhood, taking care of each other. The truth is that everyone has their own life to live, dreams to achieve and different desires. She only keeps the wounds of the past but not the beautiful memories they created together. These beautiful memories did not exist forever as she hoped but instead of cherishing them, she overshadows them with her feeling of bitterness..
