Everyone has a family member, friend, or beloved pet so sick you didn't know if they would live or die, and you discover a new surgical procedure or medication available to save it. Have you ever wondered where these new surgical procedures or medications come from? When you think about all the major medical advances of the last few decades and beyond, it comes down to animal research. As research advances, we need to understand how the body works and how diseases progress. We must find ways to treat, cure or prevent disease and disability. The use of animal research gives us new technologies and medicines that benefit both humans and animals by treating and extending life. Animals are used in research projects as a range of scientific techniques. They are used in human trials, computer modeling, cell cultures and statistical techniques; however, animals are only used in research for which no other techniques are available. There is some research that you cannot use on human subjects or computers, such as reproducing a beating heart or a stroke, understanding the complicity of different parts of a living system, from molecules to cells to systems like breathing and circulation. Although human subjects are used in some cases to test new drugs or procedures, it is sometimes ethically unacceptable to use human subjects due to testing for climate control, diet, housing, clean air , temperatures and genetic makeup; this is why animal subjects like rodents are used for research. The humane use of laboratory animals is covered by legislation requiring the so-called "three Rs" described as the reduction, refinement and replacement of the use of animals in the life sciences, concepts or ...... middle of article ...... this is the only way for researchers to move forward in medical advancement. Animal research will always be necessary as long as there are new, unsolved diseases and even those we have yet to solve that are costing the lives of our loved ones. The successful use of animal research testing continually provides new answers to advanced technologies and drugs. Many human and animal lives have already been saved, even though animals are used in research aimed at discovering answers to cures and treatments. Laws governing research facilities ensure that the utmost care and protection of the safety of animals is monitored as well as any research conducted by researchers and their staff. As we look to the future, animal research plays a very important role in discovering new advanced technologies, disease treatments and new surgical techniques to extend the lives of humans and animals..
