In this particular story, Lu-Lu is the ambition and push Heather needs to understand the freedom she already had, but which she never used. For Heather, Lu-Lu was more of a symbol of movement and change. Whereas in “Stay”, the transformation for the narrator comes only from the friendship that the dog offers, a bit like a human. The two became so close that the narrator began using “we” and “we” to describe the dog and himself (Schuman 107). The pressure and importance placed on the relationship with their dog is nothing new, many humans project their problems and emotions onto animals in the hope that they will help them as if they were was acting like another person. It seems that rather than physically helping humans solve their problems, animals' lack of understanding helps distract humans from their problems. However, the dog ultimately helps him feel a strong connection and the "...respite..." of having Deli by his side longer makes the narrator grateful to have his friend by his side to "...do everything exactly the same manner” (Schuman
