Pearl as The Scarlet LetterThe Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a novel that shows the Puritan way of life. Society does not accept the fact that Hester committed the sin of adultery, so they cast her out by making her wear a scarlet letter "A" on her chest. The pearl is the product of Hester's sin, the scarlet letter is the product of society. This idea shows that Pearl is the scarlet letter and the scarlet letter is Pearl. There are many ways that Pearl is represented as the scarlet letter because she is seen as part of nature, she is the physical connection between Dimmesdale and Hester, and Pearl is the reason that Dimmesdale and Hester finally accept their sin and make their confession before society and people within society. The reasons are listed in this way because in the first nature is a force stronger than human force, then comes its connection between Dimmesdale and Hester because it is the natural connection which is a link from the first to the second and also its being . the reason why Dimmesdale and Hester accept sin is the latter because there is a stronger bond here between the child and the parents which is linked to the previous reason. The pearl is the product of a natural act performed by two human beings. It is the sexual act. But society considers it bad because there was no social contract between the parents to have this baby. But it's still natural, so that makes Pearl natural and rejected by society. Even her mother notes that it is society that seems to make Pearl the “bad” girl that she is: “She knew her action was bad; so she could not believe that the result would be positive. Day after day. she looked with fear at the child's growing nature, always dreading to detect some dark and wild peculiarity, which might restore the guilt to which she owed her being. the evil comes from his mother’s “guilt”. So if Hester doesn't have any of this guilt that comes from society, then she would naturally be a good daughter. Additionally, Pearl seems to be connected to nature as there is some contact where Pearl has some sort of communication with Pearl..
