One of the greatest battles in Canadian history was the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Countless numbers of brave young men lost their lives in this famous war. The Battle of Vimy Ridge therefore remains one of the most celebrated and respected events in Canadian history. Additionally, many Canadians today view this battle as the birth of their nation and a defining moment in Canadian history. The Battle of Vimy Ridge took place on April 9, 1917, and took place at Vimy, Pas-de-Calais, France. The Germans held the ridge for over two years; as a result, allowing them to strengthen their position to the point that the Germans believed it impregnable. The French attempted to take control of Vimy Ridge with up to 20 divisions, but failed miserably. After France's failed attempts, the British tried to do the same, but they were also defeated by the Germans. Canadian soldiers faced an incredible challenge. They were expected to achieve what the British and French failed to do in almost three years. With pressure mounting, the Canadians were expected to accomplish a near-impossible feat....
