Adolescent girls benefit from approximately 40 hours of media exposure each week. This is the time that adolescents spend the most on an activity other than school and sleeping. Adolescent girls are heavily influenced by the ideal body image they see on screen. Girls struggle to achieve the ideal body image and may diet or develop eating disorders to gain control of their weight and shape. When girls fail to do this, they may become depressed and have lower self-esteem. However, most model and celebrity bodies are difficult for the average person to achieve. In fact, it's so difficult that many celebrities retouch their bodies to become slimmer and look more beautiful. A research team from Temple University conducted a study in which they created a website called My Pop Studio. On the interactive website, teenage girls were asked to give themselves a makeover using makeup, different hairstyles and physical attributes. The result was that most girls wanted to appear thinner, white and blonde, much like a Barbie doll. This is because the media has created an ideal image of what a girl should look like. Teenage girls associate their success and popularity with weight and beauty. In the public eye, tall, skinny models and celebrities are popular, while overweight actresses and models are ridiculed. Media includes online forms of communication such as social media. Tumblr is a very popular site among teenage girls. It is a microblogging platform that allows users to post multimedia content to a short-form blog. On Tumblr, there is a group of people called “Depression Seekers.” They post black and white photos with a quote of misunderstood unrest. When mothers exercise obsessively, diet consistently, or make disparaging comments about their own appearance, this influences the daughter, as mothers are the most influential role model for most daughters. Fathers also need to be more careful in their response to media images of sexy, thin women. Campaigns have been launched by companies about real beauty to try to teach girls that they should appreciate who they are. Campaigns attempt to reject the ideal body image and explain that a certain beauty is not accessible in the media. The Dove company has created a stunning campaign about real beauty.
