Neil Gaiman has received numerous awards and honors in his memory for his novel Coraline, including the Hugo Award for Best Novel, the Bram Stoker Prize for Best Book for Young Readers and is a Blue Ribbon winner. Author Phillip Pullman acclaimed that "[t]his book is wonderfully strange and frightening" and Lemony Snicket, author of A Series of Unfortunate Events, said: "[t]his book tells a fascinating and disturbing story that makes me almost scared him to death. » The strange and dark composition that Gaiman is very famous for is perfectly demonstrated in Coraline's other world. Coraline, a bored and ignored young girl, explores the wonders of her home, moving from her parents' house to "the negative mirror image in the other parents' house" (Wilkie-Stibbs). In this other world, Coraline endures frightening and unusual scenarios. Gaiman effortlessly shows how something that seems familiar can produce so much uncertainty. Even though this alternate world is just on the other side of the wall, no one really knows where it is. In the other world, Gaiman allows Coraline to experience mysterious and frightening scenarios where he reveals that in such a world, many unexpected things happen that leave readers unsure of what will happen next. Coraline Jones is a little girl who moves into an apartment (formerly a house) with her parents where her neighbors are not so ordinary. Even though she lives in an old house with these strange neighbors, Coraline is always bored and unentertained. Her parents work hard and they "[do] mostly things on computers, which meant they were home most of the time", but generally neglect Coraline (Gaiman 5). When Coraline is...... middle of paper ......r in Coraline and the readers. The meaner the other mother becomes; the less she looks like Coraline's real mother. This fear brings out Coraline's courage when she challenges her mother to a game she is terribly good at, "a game of exploration" (Gaiman 90). Coraline's exploration game is like a mystery to solve. She tries to find her parents and the souls of the three little ghosts so she can free them and free herself from the other mother. Since the other mother is the creator of this world, will she make it difficult for Coraline to find the things she needs so that Coraline "is a most respectful daughter", "that she loves [ Coraline]” and be “with [her] forever” (Gaiman 89)? This game of chance makes readers want to know what Coraline's fate will be in the end and if she will manage to defeat the other malicious mother..
