Essay / Dry September by William Faulkner and Eudora Wetley...
A lot of people say to accept yourself, but it's hard to be treated differently because of who you are. In Southern Gothic fiction, there are many visible signs of how people are treated differently because of their appearance. It is interesting to look at our current times because so many human laws and expectations have changed. I believe that the people in these stories were treated unfairly and that this would never have happened in today's society. I chose to watch “Dry September” by William Faulkner and “Keela the Outcast Indian Maiden” by Eudora Welty because I saw that the stories were the most shaped. by race relations in the South. If the way race was viewed was different back then, these stories wouldn't even exist. There are different ways that white people treated African Americans in the South and they are all cruel and unfair in my opinion. In Faulkner's “Dry September,” African Americans live among whites but are treated much less. These stories took place in a slightly awkward period after emancipation but before the civil rights movement. Since African Americans were free but didn't really have any rights, the people of this town feel it is their responsibility to take care of things. In the story, the majority of white men in town go to "take care" of Will Mayes after he is accused of raping Minnie Cooper, a white woman. The story doesn't actually tell the reader if Will Mayes is killed, but it does imply that white men kill him. Another aspect of this news that I consider unfair is the fact that people are taking a white person's word for it. on a black person solely because of the color of their skin. Minnie Cooper said Will Mayes raped her and almost middle of paper...... Americans resorted to home remedies, which proved unsuccessful. Due to the fact that African Americans did not have equal opportunities they returned not only to advance in the financial world but also to gain the respect of others. I don't think African Americans would have thought that it would take all the way to the civil rights movement to get equal rights. This is about how the characters in these short stories were treated because they were treated unfairly and not humanely. In conclusion, African Americans were treated far from the standards they should have been. They lived in difficult circumstances that were difficult to overcome. I find it quite astonishing that they overcame these obstacles and were considered equal to white people. Of course, there will always be racism in the world, but compared to what it was a hundred years ago, it's revolutionary..
