Essay / Boiling Point by Chef Jose Andres - 980
Curiosity is a trait found in various individuals throughout history and the present. Curiosity constantly keeps your mind active instead of passive, helps your mind observe new ideas, opens doors to new possibilities that were hidden behind the shadows of normal life, and can overall change your character. Individuals such as Albert Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, Stephen Hawking, and Leonardo da Vinci are just some of the many people who have not only benefited from their curiosity but also left an immovable mark on history. The narrator of “Boiling Point,” José Andres, exemplifies the ideal image of a character filled with curiosity. José Andres developed a passion for cooking while watching his parents prepare meals throughout his childhood, each cooking on different days (his mother during the week and his father having barbecues on the weekends). José mainly focuses on what he learned from watching his father grill his special dish (paella) for the community on the weekends. The narrator explains paella as a rice dish cooked in a wide, shallow pan with two hands. The protagonist frequently uses his childhood to remember the different settings in which his father prepared paella. For example, Jose remembers the day his father was cooking for a fundraiser at his school. Jose remembers his first culinary experience as a moment of enthusiasm: “When I was eleven or twelve years old, I was old enough and impatient enough to start. helping my father with his Sunday meals” (Joseph 14), in which he helped his father gather the necessary materials. At the same time, José was always eager to do more, and by the age of fourteen he was able to light the fire like an expert. The narrator talks about various lessons learned from his father such as, s...... middle of paper ...... (I never get tired of eating it). As a human, I find that food tastes better when I'm hungry. Also, I have to admit that I am a picky eater, which sometimes prevents my mother from cooking different types of foods. Perhaps the best thing about being an eater is that you avoid the hassle of preparing the meal, especially when you're known for making a mess in the kitchen. A kitchen in a house keeps a mother satisfied and busy. I can confirm this by admitting that my mother spends most of her time in a kitchen, not because she has to, but simply because it is her passion. Even though I cause various disasters in the kitchen, my mother always likes to have a partner to help her. Plus, being a picky eater doesn't stop me from complementing her in the meal she prepares. Most importantly, as long as passion is an active ingredient, it makes everything taste better..
