    Many factors shaped the modern Olympic movement from 1892 to 2002. The initial goal was to create an international community through sporting competition. Much like ancient games between Greek city-states, these games were designed to promote unity. However, over time, many world events such as the Cold War and women's suffrage changed the goals of the Olympics. Political opinions and movements began to shape the Olympics. Additionally, winnings and economic activities have become an important aspect of the Olympic Games. The participation of nations during the 20th century involved nationalism as well as social, political and economic reasons for joining and participating in the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games were originally created with the intention of creating an international community of peace. As noted in Documents 1 and 6, the Olympics were intended to become "the true free trade of the future." This means that through the Olympic Games, peace would become international, like the peace created by free trade. Likewise, Document 6 describes that the ****** promulgated by the Olympic Games are those of peaceful foreign policy, democracy and social progress.
