There are many ways to grab an audience's attention in a short story, essay, or speech. In Twain's short story, he shows how man descends from the animal kingdom instead of ascending from the animals. His essay inspires the reader to feel what Mark Twain feels. He describes his emotions through metaphors and collects the emotion of the audience. He also uses examples of how man can be more cruel than the animal kingdom. He is very sarcastic in his story and is also a bit comical at times. Mark Twain uses pathos, ethos, and logos in his short story "The Damned Human Race" by comparing and contrasting the harsh views of humanity to the actions of animals. Pathos refers to the ability to attract an audience through one's emotions. In “The Damned Human Race,” the title itself grabs the audience’s attention. Through his examples in the short story, he makes his audience believe that humans are in fact the bottom of the animal kingdom. Mark Twain's short story is successful because he uses many metaphors that the audience can relate to. Twain states: “Roosters keep harems, but it is with the consent of their concubines; therefore no harm is committed. Men maintain harems, but it is by brute force, privileged by atrocious laws that the other sex has no right to create. In this matter the man occupies a much lower place than the cock” (Twain, 2). In this example, Mark Twain is exhausting human beings. He draws the reader in by using several metaphors so that the audience can feel pity and eventually anger. Mark Twain uses ethos in establishing credibility. He claims to use the scientific method in his studies. The scientific method is generally used by scientists to prove an experiment. The results are neither guessed nor speculative... middle of paper ...... in this experiment he concludes that the earl is a cruel animal and the anaconda is not. He observes that the count destroys everything even if it serves no purpose, and that the anaconda does not. Twain believes that this experiment shows that the Count is descended from the anaconda and that he lost something in the transition. In conclusion, Mark Twain is able to successfully draw his audience into his short story by using pathos, ethos, and logos. His realistic comparisons between man and the animal kingdom are credible. He is able to stir the audience's emotions through his use of metaphors so that the reader feels Twain's emotions and eventually leads to a change in what seems to be humanity's wrong path.
