  • Essay / Teaching morality is more important than sex education in...

Controversy is mounting in America over the nature of sex education in the country's high schools. Studies show that 81 percent of American adults support a joint program teaching abstinence and contraception, as opposed to one focused solely on abstinence (Roper 0316946), and 79 percent support contraception education regardless. regardless of the level of sexual activity of adolescents (Roper 0340807). The sad reality is that contraception is society's attempt to find a "quick fix" to a much deeper problem than teenage sexuality. In the debate over "better safe sex," educators and parents must not only consider health issues, but also reevaluate the morality of the nation's youth. Leafing through Planned Parenthood's literature on abortion, contraception, and teen sex, it becomes apparent that Planned Parenthood promotes contraception education and opposes abstinence education: " These abstinence-until-marriage programs are an unrealistic attempt to reduce the incidence of teen pregnancy using a “say no” approach” (“Reducing Teen Pregnancy”). ). A good portion of American teens agree, as evidenced by the fact that 77 percent of women and 85 percent of men will have sex before the age of twenty ("Teen Sex and Pregnancy"). They are encouraged to use contraception. It is interesting to note, however, that adolescents do not receive all the information regarding contraception, as Josh McDowell and Bob Hostetler illustrate: Not long ago, I attended a conference during the "Week safe sex” at school. The speaker opened with a statement that elicited a groan of discomfort from the crowd: "You've been brainwashed!" When the students calmed down, he continued. "You had a whole week of 'safe sex' instruction...... middle of paper... study room." Time October 18, 2013: n. page. Online. Internet.
