  • Essay / The play Othello and Tim Blake by William Shakespeare...

The play Othello by William Shakespeare and the film O by Tim Blake Nelson both share common themes and clearly obvious plots. People can go so far as to say that O is a 21st century ripoff of Othello. That aside, both authors use different techniques to show common themes. Even though they wrote at very different times; Themes such as jealousy, racism, and appearance versus reality are still common in both stories. Shakespeare expresses these themes using different tools such as soliloquies and literary devices, while Nelson uses different shots, a variety of cinematic techniques, sound effects, and music to display these themes. In Shakespeare's Othello, jealousy is a common theme throughout the play. Shakespeare uses characterizations and imagery to show this. By characterizing people like Othello through jealousy, the reader is able to understand the destruction of jealousy and what it does to even the greatest people. Othello is presented as a high-class Venetian, at the top of the army. He is presented as having a very high social status and when he speaks of his new wife, he can only speak of the pure love between them both. As the mystical power of jealousy takes hold of Othello, he transforms into a completely different man; he is furious with jealousy and treats Desdemona as if she were nothing to him. The woman's claim that he could only speak beautiful words contrasts with the end of the story when he calls her terrible comments such as "Strumpet Ipendunt!" Despite Desdemona's pleas and her innocence, jealousy is capable of taking over the mind of any individual and making them lose the values of honor and trust. Othello's mind becomes so corrupted by Iago that the once calm and honorable character eventually becomes so mad...... middle of paper ......n but also represents the theme of illusion versus reality. Hugo is able to say things that make people think he's a person he's not supposed to be. Tim Blake Nelson aims to take a more contemporary view on this theme, instead of using values such as high status or power to deceive people; he expressed more important values for a contemporary society such as popularity and social image. Although both authors wrote in completely different eras to very diverse audiences, they both effectively use techniques to express themes of jealousy and delusion versus reality. Shakespeare uses literary devices such as soliloquies to demonstrate these themes while Tim Blake Nelson is able to use pop music and a variety of different camera effects to appeal to a more contemporary audience, but both composers are able to express the same themes using a very similar story..
