Essay / The emotional toll of deployment - 2176
The emotional toll of deployment “In war, there are no soldiers unharmed. » - José Narosky We have sent soldiers all over the world to protect us, but do we know how this affects them? We would feel disconnected from everything we know. One would also begin to need supplies and lose motivation to continue with the task. It is therefore imperative that we, those protected by Soldiers, help provide these necessary items. Thousands of American troops, after being deployed for extended periods of time, are beginning to run out of necessary items such as: Chap Stick, sunscreen, vitamins, insecticides and toiletries. Sending care packages abroad, containing items such as those listed previously, could help lift our spirits. Being in the middle of the fighting, the soldiers see traumatic scenes. It would therefore not be uncommon for these soldiers to develop cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. These people suffer from night terrors, have difficulty carrying out normal work and have difficulty sleeping. Some suffer from separation anxiety because they are away from their family. “You become depressed because you don't have a lot of contact with the people you're so used to. Once you're away, you have to get used to your classmates being your family. It's easier that way. (Jones)Many don't even realize the effect their absence has on their thought processes and minds, until they return home. Deployed men and women, due to lack of communication, begin to feel like everyone back home has forgotten them. This makes them discouraged and depressed.
