Essay / The Nobel Prize by Ed John Merriman and Jay Winter
This 2006 article by Ed John Merriman and Jay Winter, entitled "The Nobel Prize," discusses the history and significance of the Nobel Prize, as well as than its operation. To understand the history of the Nobel Prize, we must start with the death of Alfred Nobel. Alfred Nobel was known for his work on chemicals and explosives and was actually the inventor of dynamite. Providing dynamite to the world, solely for mining, he found his creation used for violent purposes, a new tool of war that was used to kill thousands. Regretting having caused all this destruction, he decided to reserve all his money to reward those who have made a notable difference in the world, particularly in the fields of physics, medicine, literature, chemistry and peace (as stated in Alfred Nobel's will). . The economics prize would then be added and financed by the Bank of Sweden in 1968. When Nobel died on December 10, 1896, his will was found and executed by his assistant Ragnar Sohlman. Sohlman then created the Nobel Foundation, whose purpose was to administer the capital, resulting from Nobel's will, for the prizes. Although the Nobel Foundation has funding power, it is not responsible for choosing the winners. The winners are chosen by the Nobel committees, one for each prize. These committees receive thousands of applications each year and limit the number of candidates to just over 100 per category. These committees then consult with experts in the field to determine not only the quality of the work, but also its impact on the field of study. As October approaches, the candidates are narrowed down to a few and a simple majority vote takes place to choose the recipient. The decisions are then made public and the recipient wins the award at the ceremony...... in the middle of an article...... rather than an opinion, to determine the difficulty of winning the award. The author is a credible writer, as he is a historian specializing in the impact of World War I on Europe during the 20th century and he is also a graduate of Yale University. The author has no personal gain from this article, as it is purely informational. I personally believe that the Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious awards in the world. Throughout history, Nobel Prize winners have brought great changes to the world today, which have revolutionized the way we live. Another reason why I believe this is the lengthy selection process which ensures the quality of the candidate's work. After reading this article, I am curious to know more about the creator of the Alfred Nobel Prize. Where did the majority of his money come from? Why did he win this award? Here are my opinions and questions on the subject.
