Essay / Save energy now to save the Earth later - 937
There are many different resources for energy use today, both renewable and non-renewable. Non-renewable resources include resources that, once used, will cease to exist, such as oil and coal extracted from the Earth. Kentucky, the state I live in, was ranked as the third largest producer of coal-fired electricity in 2011 (Kentucky, 2012). This production represented 10 percent of the United States' total coal production for that year, as well as ninety-three percent of the state's total electricity production (Kentucky, 2012). The Ghent Power Plant, which is actually about seven miles from my house, has been among the 100 largest U.S. power plants since 2010 (Kentucky, 2012). My home currently uses electricity and natural gas resources. The electricity comes from a power company that uses a coal-fired electricity generation method and gas is our heat source through the furnace. Coal and natural gas, however, are fossil fuels and therefore not renewable. To travel, our two vehicles use gasoline, refined from petroleum, also a non-renewable resource, the use of which produces large quantities of pollution which contributes to the greenhouse effect. The mining of these two species also affects the ecosystems in which they are found, destroying forests and thus removing the habitats of several animals. However, for our next vehicle purchase, I believe we will strongly consider a hybrid vehicle, running on both gasoline and electricity. If renewable resources become available to meet these energy needs, however, we can only hope that current electricity providers will upgrade their equipment to provide electricity via renewable methods. As such, there are three renewable resources that I will focus on... middle of paper ...... beginning of this incentive, very few of the light bulbs in our home are regular light bulbs. Recently we chose the option offered by our power company of installing a switch on our water heater that, during the summer months, modulates the amount of time the water heater is actually on, saving money electricity during these warmer months. Other ways to save energy would be to regularly replace the filters in our house, I could carpool to work and my husband could walk to work more often, and we could install apples showers in bathrooms which would save less energy. water flow to conserve the amount of hot water used (Energy Conservation, 2013). There are several steps people can take to save energy, and the incentives put in place by energy companies to help them do so are commendable. Saving energy now could very well save the Earth later.
