    IntroductionThe learner analysis was conducted to find out the target population who will use the reading comprehension unit. The main goal of the analysis was to find information that would help create a unit of understanding and teach students the skills needed to understand what they were reading. To do this, criterion-referenced test (CRT) results were examined and a survey was created to investigate teachers' ideas about reading comprehension. CRT scores were analyzed and showed that 30% of 3rd grade students performed below the 80% required to pass. the written comprehension part of the test. The survey was distributed to all third grade teachers at Enterprise Elementary. The survey included five items addressing teachers' ideas about reading comprehension. The survey was designed to better understand what teachers believed would improve understanding and can be found in Appendix A. Demographic Information The 3rd grade participants in the study consisted of 65 students from two classes. There were 34 boys and 31 girls, aged 8 and 9 years old. The class consisted of students of varying ability levels. There were 5 ESL learners who tested below grade level in reading comprehension on the CRT and 8 special education students who were also behind grade level in their reading progress. Relevant Group Characteristics Enterprise Elementary is a Title One school with approximately 45% of students receiving reduced or free lunch. In this group of participants, 15 students were below grade level on a teacher-administered developmental reading assessment (DRA). As students learn, they realize that they all learn differently. Many students were able to learn through a variety of different teaching approaches. The reading comprehension unit allowed students to access their strengths and learn in a way that suited them. Cultural CharacteristicsEnterprise Elementary is a rural school located in Enterprise, Utah. According to the 2000 census, approximately 1,300 people lived in Enterprise. The racial makeup of the city in 2000 was about 93% white, less than 1% Native American, less than 1% Asian, less than 1% from other races, and about 1% from two or more races . In Enterprise, just over 3% were Hispanic or Latino. The school's students reflected the demographic makeup of the community.
