  • Essay / The Olympic Games and Media Coverage - 1796

The Olympic Games are a very popular and large-scale sporting event that receives an extremely high volume of national media coverage. For several years, major channels like NBC have offered the public continuous coverage of the Games. Many other major media outlets, such as NBC, have also done the same by dedicating sections solely to the Olympics. The Olympics are a time when citizens come together to defend their home country, strengthening their sense of nationalism and pride and encouraging their national athletes to emerge victorious and make the country a global power. Organically, the games give off a feeling of war mentality because countries compete for the prize, the golden metal. As a competitive college athlete, I can understand the sense of pride and nationalism one feels before and especially after competing and beating an opponent. Using critical discourse analysis, I will explore how media coverage of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics provides its home country viewers with a sense of nationalism and pride through a focus on form physics and athletics. In addition to this, I will also draw inspiration from the millennial mentality of the Spartans which also emphasized physical excellence from a young age for competitive purposes. I gather information by reading articles about the Sochi Olympics in the New York Times and NBC, as well as comparing them with Russian newspapers such as the Moscow Times and Rossiyskaya Gazeta to see what kinds of strategies and themes are used by both countries. conveying nationalism and fitness to their viewers. As I mentioned above, I am currently reading American articles from the New York Times middle of paper...... the media presents the things that viewers influence the way we view our countries and others countries from other countries, when it comes to athletes and just the country as a whole. For my final article, I chose to look at an article that simply focused on explaining what critical analysis discourse is. I liked it because it gave me a little background on where it started, who adopted it, how it developed, and the goals of this type of analysis. By reading this article, I learned a lot more about what to look for in other articles in order to get what I expect from them. Since the power of linguistics is at the heart of this method, I must ensure that I am critical in how the analysis describes what I am looking for in my research. I also make sure I have direction, which I feel like I do. With the previous articles I analyzed, they seem to achieve these goals.
