Gay people adopting and having children has been a hot topic of debate over the past two decades. This is a topic on which many people have very strong moral and ethical beliefs. The central focus of many of these debates revolves around children who will be adopted by gay parents. People opposed to the idea of gay people adopting and raising children may not only be opposed to the idea that gay people have the right to be parents, but may be more concerned about the child's well-being. It's not irrational to worry about the children in this situation, because we want them to have the best life possible. But is there any reason to think that gay parents are worse than traditional heterosexual parents? In this article, I hope to analyze the differences between being raised in a gay family and being raised in a traditional family and see if it really matters if your parents are gay. It is estimated that approximately one to nine million children in the United States have at least one homosexual parent. According to the 2000 census, there were 594,000 same-sex partner households, of which twenty-seven percent had children in that household (Linville, O'Neil, n.d.). Although there is no federal law in the United States strictly prohibiting same-sex couples from adopting children, over the years some states have made it difficult or impossible for some same-sex couples to adopt . Some states have prohibited the joint adoption of a child and a son, only one parent can be the sole adopter of the child. Other states have made it so that only married couples can adopt children, and in their states gay people are not allowed to marry.
