  • Essay / Poverty Discrimination among Minorities in the United States

Society has been battling one of today's greatest social problems for over a decade. Poverty is relentless throughout our nation and around the world. Today we see that poverty is a common problem for ethnic minorities in the United States. Two articles, More Than Just Nickels and Dimes: A Cross-National Analysis of Working Poverty in Affluent Democracies and The Geography of Exclusion: Race, Segregation, and Concentrated Poverty, come from a scientific journal. While I collected other information from two popular website articles from the National Poverty Center | University of Michigan and racial and ethnic disparities among low-income families. The articles put into perspective that poverty is a growing problem in the United States. The first article I reviewed was The Geography of Exclusion: Race, Segregation, and Concentrated Poverty. Lichter et al. stated that "the 21st century began with a Great Recession that led to the collapse of the stock market, falling housing prices, high foreclosure rates, and rising unemployment rates" (Lichter, et al 2012). In 2000, 32 million Americans lived in poverty, and by the end of the decade, 46.2 million. More than half of these people belong to ethnic minorities. Overall, poverty rates for African Americans and Hispanics are three times higher than those for whites. Which raises the question of concentrated and targeted poverty (Lichter et al. 2012). Thirty percent of poor Americans live in poor places, supporting the idea of concentrated poverty. Lichter et al. (2012) believe that too much time has been spent studying and helping inner-city residents while neglecting the rural poor.
