Ethical Issues Raised by Privacy Service ProvidersSummary: This article examines the use of Internet technologies (specifically SafeWeb.com) to thwart invasions privacy and censorship. The article begins by exploring the methods by which governments, corporations, and commercial agents invade privacy. He also discusses Internet censorship at the corporate and government levels. He then discusses SafeWeb.com, a technology that allows Internet users to surf the Web privately and view censored content. The article concludes by exploring some of the ethical issues raised by Internet privacy and censorship in specific relation to SafeWeb, concluding that the application of SafeWeb to circumvent the authority of governments and corporations is inherently unethical . Part of the appeal of the Internet has always been the anonymity it offers its users. However, as the Internet grows, bringing in capitalists and governments, the old rules are rapidly changing. E-commerce companies use the latest technologies to track the smallest details of customer behavior. The FBI's Carnivore email tracking system is increasingly being used to violate Internet users' privacy. Companies now monitor their employees' web and email usage. In addition to these privacy violations, Internet users also find their use censored as governments, corporations, and other institutions block access to certain sites. However, as technology can be used to wage war on individual freedoms, it can also be used in the fight against censorship and invasion of privacy.
