Essay / The Duchess and the Jeweler by Virginia Woolf - 1572
The Duchess and the Jeweler is the story of the world's greatest jeweler who had promised his mother to become the richest jeweler in the world as a child, but now that his dream has come true. materialized, he does not feel satisfied. So, seeking satisfaction, he knowingly buys fake pearls from a duchess in exchange for spending an entire weekend with her daughter with whom he is in love. The purpose of this essay is to show how Virginia Woolf managed to present the inner spirit of the characters, their struggle and their communication through the least amount of verbal communication between them. The silent communication created by Woolf's "The Duchess and the Jeweler" is on the one hand the communication between the reader and the story and on the other hand the communication between the characters in the text themselves. In other words, this story first reveals the minds of the characters to the reader through as little explicit expression of their states and then presents the interaction between the characters in the story through as little dialogue as possible between them. the communication between the reader and the story is the revelation of Oliver Bacon's childhood memories which takes place without the author giving them a voice. The reader's very first acquaintance with Oliver's childhood occurs when he addresses himself: "you who began your life in a grimy little alley" and then finds himself in his childhood memories. This very short statement from Oliver to himself is very expressive of his childhood and also of his attitude towards this period of his life. Through the author's earlier descriptions of Oliver's whereabouts, his servant, and his habits, it is revealed that Oliver Bacon is now a very wealthy man while this short self-address reveals his poverty of childhood. It is also through his retrospections that readers learn that he began by selling stolen dogs, continued with the sale of watches in a small counter, and finally was promoted to his current profession as a jeweler. It is therefore mainly through Oliver's silent memories that the reader becomes familiar with his beginnings. Also this little conversation of Oliver with himself shows the reader that he is concerned about his childhood and all the efforts he made to save all his money. Even if he never talks about it, his constant retrospections show the importance that his childhood has for him..
