Essay / Chronic Illnesses Related to Oral Hygiene in Adolescents and... -dental in adolescents and young adults. Fifty-nine percent of 12 to 19 year olds suffer from dental caries. Four times more adolescents suffer from dental cavities than asthma. Even more troubling are the facts that "fewer than one in three children enrolled in Medicaid received at least one preventative dental service in a recent year" and "many states only provide emergency dental services to Medicaid-eligible adults.” Acquiring good hygiene skills such as washing hands, bathing, laundry, as well as maintaining good oral health are important life skills for anyone. I work with special needs students in a transition program focused on life skills and career training. Our students demonstrated a lack of understanding and skills in the area of personal hygiene and grooming. These skills are important for their future professional and social context. Specific areas to focus on would be: oral hygiene, skin care, hair care, nail care, body odor management/prevention, and appropriate/clean clothing. Acquiring these skills is essential for the independence and health of each student.Current Conditions and Desired ConditionsCurrent ConditionsStudents lack many hygiene and grooming skills. Many seem to have a basic idea of how to perform certain tasks, but lack specific steps, attention to detail, or reasoning about why certain skills are important. For example, when students were observed brushing their teeth, they either forgot parts of their mouth or did not spend enough time on this task to ensure that each tooth was properly maintained . Students are able to follow the checks......in the middle of a sheet......and be independent based on their physical abilities and still rely on their parents or guardians to complete certain tasks , including laundry, washing your hair or identifying a need for cleanliness. The desired state allows students to identify their own hygiene needs throughout the day, maintain appropriate levels in all sub-skills, improve their health in response to good hygiene, accurately follows hygiene and personal care procedures and maintains an appropriate appearance from head to toe. systematically on a daily basis. Mastering these skills will benefit students' health, social life, employment status, independence, and overall well-being.ReferencesPreventing tooth decay through community programs.
