Unfortunately, before the park was completed, Walt Disney died and the task of finishing the park was left to his brother, Roy Disney. Roy worked hard to complete the park as Walt had envisioned it and five years later, in 1971, Disney World was ready to welcome guests with its first park, Magic Kingdom. Finishing the park was one of the last things Roy did, just three months after opening Roy died. Even after the Disney brothers left, the park continued to expand and continues to expand. In order, the major expansions of Disney World are Epcot in 1982, MGM Studios, now known as HollyWood Studios and Typhoon Lagoon, in 1989, Blizzard Beach in 1995 and finally Animal Kingdom in 1998. Many expansions and updates updates have taken place and are currently underway inside. from each of these parks as well. Today, the park includes four theme parks, two water parks, and twenty-five resorts, all located on the 47 miles of land purchased by Walt in the 1960s. Less than a third of the land purchased has been used . The remainder of the land that is not used for parks or resorts is either untouched or used for conservation purposes.
