The short story "Sanchez", written by Richard Dokey, is the story of Juan Sanchez and his family. “Sanchez” is told in many different contexts, all of which are unique and represent the different feelings that Dokey describes to his readers. The settings are described realistically; they affect Juan and Jesus in a personal way. The settings vary from a small village in Mexico to the Sierra Nevada in California. Initially, the story takes place in Stockton in the San Joaquin Valley. Juan's son Jesus got his first job at a cannery called Flotill. Stockton turns out to be a working-class town where Juan had previously lived. For Jesus, Stockton is his future and his hopes are high enough to protect him from the "downtown" part of town. Jesus had to live in a cheap hotel while he worked in the cannery. The hotel was described as stained, dirty and smelly (151). Jesus is proud of his room and his work, but Juan only considers them disappointing. Stockton, for Juan, brings back memories of hard work and time away from his wife, La Belleza. La Belleza was the main center of Juan's life and if he was away from her, he definitely wasn't happy; that's why Juan has bad feelings for Stockton. From the hotel we, as readers, are taken through the town of Stockton. There are destroyed buildings and rubble everywhere. A “hot and dirty” billiard room was Jesus’ “entertainment” (152).
