  • Essay / La Plaza De Cultura Artes - 1552

La Plaza de Cultura ArtesThe mission of LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes is a non-profit organization/museum founded to celebrate and cultivate an appreciation of the enduring and evolving influence of Mexico and Mexico. -American culture, with a particular emphasis on the Mexican-American experience unique to Los Angeles and Southern California. The museum itself is near where Los Angeles was founded in 1871 and features a 2.2-inch flagship campus that includes two historic and renovated buildings (the Vickrey Brunswig Building and the Plaza House). All surrounded by magnificent public gardens. The Plaza is also located near the heart of Los Angeles, surrounded by other ethnic sites like Little Tokyo. (However, after visiting, one can't help but realize the homeless problem in the Los Angeles area and realize that some are even Chicanos.) When visiting La Plaza De Culturas Y Artes , I learned a lot more interesting, but surprising information. on the history of Chicanos in California. For example, in the 1910s, heavy immigration of Mexicans and other Chicanos to coal mines and big business farms made California one of the richest states in the United States. I also learned that most of California's economy relies heavily on immigrants. Immigrants were the preferred workers of large companies because they did not have American rights and were given tougher jobs for lower pay. However, in Los Angeles and throughout the Southwest, the Mexican population had shifted from a heavily immigrant population to an American-born population. . This new young English-speaking generation no longer considered itself "Mexico de afuera", but began to adopt the refined American style of the time. This resulted in New Deal youth programs... middle of paper ...... I realize that few if any people know about California's true past and I believe this should be taught to the high school. I also never knew about the unfortunate circumstances of all the Chicanos who were displaced and lied to in order to build the Dodgers stadium. Being forcibly displaced essentially and promised better living conditions where they have priorities that were never built upon. I've been a Dodgers fan my whole life and never thought about the location of the stadium and how they got it. The worst part is I see so many Chicanos at games and die hard Dodgers fans who don't know the full story. Overall, I feel enlightened by the new information and history I have learned over the past few months and at the museum. . I can now embrace and express my Chicano past, know my history and ensure we take nothing for granted..
