• According to the Oxford English Dictionary 1971, hunger means 1) the feeling of discomfort or pain caused by lack of food; craving for appetite; also the state of exhaustion caused by lack of food; 2) the lack or scarcity of food in a country; 3) a strong desire or urge. World hunger fits the second definition because it concerns hunger on a global level (Hunger Notes). • Malnutrition means that a person lacks some or all of the nutritional elements necessary for good health. There are two types of malnutrition: o Protein-energy malnutrition, or PEM• This means that we lack protein and other foods that provide energy to the body. This is what is commonly associated with world hunger. This is the deadliest form of hunger because it causes a lack of protein essential for key body functions such as muscle development and maintenance. Protein can come from meat or other energy-providing sources. The amount of energy in food is measured in calories. All basic food groups provide energy. o Micronutrient • This means that there are not enough vitamins and minerals in the diet.
