There are two types of malnutrition: o Protein-energy malnutrition, or PEM• This means that we lack protein and other foods that provide energy to the body. This is what is commonly associated with world hunger. This is the deadliest form of hunger because it causes a lack of protein essential for key body functions such as muscle development and maintenance. Protein can come from meat or other energy-providing sources. The amount of energy in food is measured in calories. All basic food groups provide energy. o Micronutrient • This means that there are not enough vitamins and minerals in the diet.
