Impact of Structure and Culture on an OrganizationHigh-tech companies Oracle, Apple, Google, and Facebook have varying degrees of organically functioning organizations. How the organization chooses to structure teams and the extent to which it fosters collaboration between teams plays an important role in employee satisfaction. An examination of Oracle's history and structure from the perspective of a current employee offers insight into the internal challenges a company faces both ethically and legally, as well as the impact on job performance and employee turnover. Establishing expectations of standard behavior in the workplace is important for everyone. management levels. A “culture of respect, trust, and honest communication” can make or break a company's ability to establish and maintain ethical business operations (Long, 2013). When joining Oracle in the 1990s, many employees were greeted by the public reputation of its sales force. The teams operated under a boundaryless structure, unconstrained by structure or management and very flexible and responsive (Robbins, Decenzo & Coulter, 2013). Sales would risk any relationship to meet their quota which had been doubled from the previous year and ethics took a back seat. Over the past 11 years, the company has started to tighten its belt. Teams were periodically cleaned out, and the lack of organizational control and formal structure would allow them to expand their teams again with complete disregard. Spending budgets were ultimately reduced, but especially at the corporate level, as sales kickoffs went virtual and were no longer synonymous with week-long “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” parties.
