In its beginnings, humanity relied on religion and it played a crucial role in the formation of society. Organizing the people under a single leader helped the unruly masses to collaborate and coexist. However, humanity no longer needs a hand to get through dark times. At some point, we must take responsibility for our actions, both personally and as a society. Religion has become the justification for countless murders, decades of war, and a plethora of other vile acts. In the United States of America, it is used to generate untold amounts of unregulated money, spread ignorance and encourage intolerance. Although it has helped shape civilization as we know it today, religion has a negative effect on modern world society and should be discouraged by people around the world. One image can be found throughout history, regardless of location, that of the sun. Every human being on the planet can see it at least once a day. It is understandable that ancient humans worshiped the sun because each day it brought salvation from the elements of darkness. Over time, different cultures around the world have personified the sun, giving it all the qualities of God. The ancient Egyptians anthropomorphized the sun into Horus. Horus was born on December 25 to a virgin named Mary and his birth was marked by an eastern star and three kings. He was a teacher by the age of twelve, had his own ministry by the age of thirty, and traveled with twelve disciples. Horus also performed miracles, was crucified and even resurrected after three days. All this takes place three thousand years before the birth of Christ. Horus is not unique, in fact throughout history the same series of myths...... middle of paper ...... gain world unity or world peace with any institution which would spread ignorance, encourage violence and justify intolerance. . While not all churches can be categorized as corrupt, the form of control they exert over a free-thinking mind nonetheless remains harmful to us all. We should not try to force people to abandon religion. The repercussions of attempting to make the Church illegal or criminalize it would ultimately do more harm than good. Instead, we should encourage people to think for themselves and hope that after a few generations, religious factions will die out on their own. Only then, when the last corrupt religious institution has disappeared, can humanity move forward and take ownership of a global civil society. Although religion has helped us get to where we are today, it is only through reason and understanding that humanity will reach its adolescence..
