In this article I will examine the impact of globalization on the music industry in recent years, and in particular on the American multinational Universal Music Group (UMG). The term globalization is defined as “the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or begin to operate on an international scale” (Definition of Globalization). People's perceptions of globalization vary depending on a number of factors, including where they live, their religion, their social status, their political ideology, their cultural background and their wealth. World-renowned British academic David Held said: “Globalization refers to transcontinental or interregional flows and networks of activity, interaction and power. In short, it's about the interconnections between different regions of the world – from cultural to criminal, from financial to environmental – and how they change over time. This descriptive definition shows how globalization has an effect on many aspects across the world and describes its action of connecting people, countries and businesses through "networks of activity, interaction and power ". Furthermore, Kenichi Ochmae, a Japanese organizational theorist, stated that globalization is “the beginning of a world without borders” (Al-Rodhan, 2006). This provides a simple explanation of globalization, because the phrase "borderless world" describes exactly what globalization is, but its weakness is that it is very imprecise. Relations and activities (commercial and otherwise) between countries are changed by globalization. This results in the sharing of information, skills, knowledge and capital across the world and an increased mixing of cultures.
