Let's begin with this epic journey through time and history to see how the life of an African American has evolved, changed and grown today. 1865 to 1876 In 1865, reconstruction began after the end of the Civil War. The United States Congress passed the Thirteenth Amendment, which aimed to end slavery. Even though slavery ended, life for African Americans was not completely easy. Many African Americans faced political issues such as the inability to vote, inability to be citizens, and the Black Codes. These black codes were put in place in 1865 and ended in 1866. Black codes are "laws" that certain states had established, stating what African Americans could not do, even after slavery3Abo.. .... middle of paper ...... seeing a group of people go from slavery, without rights, to the black codes, to finally gaining civil rights and one day having a black man as president is progression major historical milestone, and only African Americans deserve the right to smile right now, in 2010 they made it, they overcame it all and now they have won equality.
