Imagine growing up and having to deal with strange looks all the time because it's hard to hear. Often ignored by parents because they don't understand the situation, or by anyone for that matter. Imagine living in a wheelchair in the hospital for a small part of your life. Facing adversity for most of one's life is not something many people would take lightly. However, some people don't want this burden to take over their lives. Kathy Buckley is a powerful woman who triumphed over many calamities such as deafness, crushing, and cancer before the age of thirty. Kathy was born in a relatively small town called Wickliffe, Ohio. At a young age, his family began to notice something was wrong. Kathy had an inability to communicate. As a child, Kathy remembers trying to play with other children, which was often difficult (Buckley). “The moment I heard someone say ‘hey Kathy, come get us,’ the game would be over,” she (Buckley) said. Initially, her parents concluded that she was slow. However, it wasn't until 2nd grade that the school administrators, psychologist, and audiologist determined that it was simply a case of hearing loss. Hearing loss affects your ability to speak properly. When she discovered she had hearing loss, she had to start wearing a hearing aid. Unfortunately, his hearing aid did more harm than good. The hearing aid she wore was loud and painful to the point of making her cry (Buckley). At school, his teachers did not give him the attention that a disabled person should receive.
