Essay / Reading response: Flowers and Superman and I
For this assignment, I had to read two articles; Flowers by Alice Walker and Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie. The two poems were radically different and each had its merits, but I preferred reading The Flowers. I have always been a fan of symbolism and allegories, so the choice of this work was obvious to me. Although I found Superman and I charming and inspiring, I thought it was a bit cliché. The Flowers is a work that I have never read before, and it gave me a very good opportunity to explore the author's hidden meanings in the story. Say no to plagiarism. How people choose to represent different aspects of a story often says a lot about them and what they are experiencing. In The Flowers, Myop is a ten-year-old girl who wanders into the woods to pick flowers and venture out to discover nature. She finds herself about a kilometer and a half from home and decides to turn back. On her way home, however, she discovers a corpse, which presumably belongs to a man who hanged himself. Looking around, she notices the parts of the noose the man used among a pink rose. Finally, Myop laid down her flowers and it was said that “summer was over”. Symbolism like this is extremely miraculous and charming to me. One of the most obvious clues is the name Myop, which is probably short for "nearsightedness." To be nearsighted is essentially to be nearsighted. Myop is a young and innocent ten-year-old who is probably unaware of the dangers and struggles of the world around her. The flowers represent her innocence, and when she places them after seeing the body, it symbolizes the loss of her innocence. The distance that separates Myop from her home could represent the distance that separates her from everything she has felt before. It would be extremely difficult for anyone to convince me that reading this and understanding this is not enjoyable. Keep in mind: this is just a sample. Many people (myself included) imagine boring, old, and complex stories when we hear this word. Last semester, in my Greek Civilization class, we read some pieces of Greek literature. I didn't enjoy these due to their complexity and odd choice of wording. I do, however, enjoy the occasional story and poem. I love reading about heroes and sacrifices, and literature is full of stories about them. Literature is much more than many of us think it is. I think it's impossible not to love literature; you just have to find the kind of literature you like.
