The country is marked by countless improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). Amputee children limp from place to place while women hide their faces from the rest of the world. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is located at 33.00 degrees north and 65.00 degrees east. Found in South Asia, in a highly conflicted region known as the Middle East and considered the crossroads of Central Asia. Landlocked, it is located in the center of Iran, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and China. The history of Afghanistan, destroyed and devastated, painted red by the blood of war and struggling to overcome its past and develop a sense of sustainability. We can see this through the education of individuals, treatment of the environment and agricultural practices. Dubbed the “graveyard of empires” (CNN article), Afghanistan's history is plagued by countless war efforts by various empires, dating back to 382 BC. Alexander the Great invaded what is now Afghanistan. After its fall, the Scythians (a nomadic people), White Huns (probably from the Tibet region), and Turks (from Turkey) invaded to claim land. 600 years later, in 642 AD, the Arab people infiltrated the territory and brought with them the religion of Islam which still remains predominant in today's Afghanistan. Soon after, the Persians drove the Arab people from the region and held it until 998, when the Turkish Ghaznavids took control of the territory. They then withdrew, giving way to Muhammad, leader and prophet of the Islamic faith. Shortly after his death, princes across the country sought to take control of various regions, dividing the country into several provinces...... middle of paper ...... reportedly executed for learning to read and write. Death for the education of the people, an unfair price that many have paid dearly. However, without the education of women and men, the country risks continuing its routine of two steps forward and one step back in its attempt to build a nation.
