  • Essay / How far can you throw (or hit) a ball? - 776

There is a lot of physics and science behind throwing a football. You need to take into account all the factors around you and determine the best angle to get the ball where it needs to be. Throwing a ball deep is all about using the right angle with the right amount of force. I want to know which angle is best to throw the ball the furthest. The angles I will test will be a low angle at 15˚, a medium angle at 45˚ and a high angle at 75˚. The force to throw the ball will be the same, so the only factor that will change will be the angle at which the ball is thrown. I think the average angle will send the ball the furthest. Strength doesn't always determine how far someone can throw a football. The better your form is and the angle at which you throw the ball is more important than your arm strength. Scientists have designed the shape of a football so that it can best travel in a tight spiral. When the ball is thrown, it follows a curved path called a parabola. Gravity is imposed on the ball at the end of its trajectory, forcing it to curve toward the highest point. The ball is thrown in a particular way so that it can form a spiral as it travels through the air. If the ball were thrown with the ends perpendicular to the ground, it would not be able to travel as far or as well. “In addition to throwing the ball first, the passer's grip and release rotates the ball on its lateral axis, and it benefits from the aerodynamics of the ball's ellipsoid shape.” As the ball cuts through the air, the material it is made of and the shape of the ball all influence how the ball will move. All quarterbacks learn to throw a spiral, because a spiral is the best way to minimize air residue... middle of paper ... long enough. There are also many factors that go into the perfect throw, but by changing the experiment a little, I can make every attempt the same, just by changing the angle. As I do the experiment, I will measure the distance each ball travels and find an average distance for each angle. This will give me my final analysis on the best angle to throw a football the farthest. References • Machin, W. (February 6, 2014). The physics of throwing a football. On Livestrong.com.
